Vitalian

Army (q.v.) commander in Thrace (q.v.) who revolted against Anastasios I (q.v.) from 513-515, representing himself as a champion of Orthodoxy against Monophysitism (q.v.). After Anastasios's death in 518, Justin I (q.v.) conciliated Vitalian (q.v.) by honoring him with the tiles of patrikios and consul (qq.v.). Vitalian was assassinated in 520, apparently at the instigation of the future Justinian I (q.v.), who regarded him as a rival.
